Chip’s Challenge was a really simple game visually. There couldn’t have been more than a hundred sprites in the whole tile set. As you play the game, the amount of creativity that went into designing the levels is astonishing. There are a few ice levels that I could probably still pass through muscle memory alone. The one that sticks out to me though is the one level with all the water where you’re making islands out of bricks. I remember suffering more than one excruciating death trying to find the exit by placing one block at a time. It was infuriating, but scratched that same itch that mining out a mountainside in Minecraft does. I never filled in the entire level, but I’m sure someone has. There was a DOS version with a storyline and floaty controls, but I only remember playing the version that came with the Best of Microsoft Entertainment Pack that had SkiFree and a bunch of other games. Now that I think of it, I don’t think I ever beat Chip’s Challenge. I never proved my worth to Melinda, or whatever her name was. The story wasn’t important, it was the journey that mattered… that’s a little too cheesy, but I’m not going to delete it.
