You know, I was really excited for Bleach when it started. I loved the premise of helping ghosts move on by killing monsters that no one could see. And I really wish they would have stuck with that for longer than a few episodes. The first season had this interesting dichotomy of living as both a shinigami and a human with conflicts on both sides. This was lost in later seasons to the point that I stopped caring that the city was being destroyed because there was no one living there that mattered. Sure, Ichigo was saving the world and using cool new abilities, but the emotional human element was gone.

Bleach suffered from extreme power creep. It’s pretty common in shounen anime. When you make your show all about becoming stronger, you have to keep ramping up the abilities of your characters as they naturally fulfill their goals until they are literally gods. I think that’s why I like One Punch Man so much. Saitama already starts off insanely strong. His struggle isn’t to gain power. He’s trying to help his friends get stronger while looking for a worthy opponent. Switching the main character to a mentor role mitigates a lot of the problems of power creep since when one pupil gets too powerful, you can switch to a new one.

Look, I’m not saying that Bleach is bad. I just want you guys to learn from it’s shortcomings so you can be more aware of the pits writers can fall into.
