I love how scary it is that Al doesn’t have a body. His memories and personality are all incorporeal. There’s nothing keeping him alive but this tiny blood seal and if it were wiped away he would look exactly the same.
I’ve always wanted to write a story about a race of people with mainly external memories. Robots or golems with a limited amount of space for memories inside their bodies so their society evolved to include clothing with lots of pockets where you can store your memories. If you drop one, it will be lost, but someone else will pick it up and adopt it as one of their memories. They’ve created a society where the line between collective memories and personal memories is blurred. Maybe I can make some commentary on the internet and how people with niche views can find each other and they’ll never have to live outside their echo chambers. Or maybe a better message would be about how growing up in the same place and time shapes you into being similar to your peers despite how individual you may think you are. I don’t know, I’m still playing with the idea.
